A is 1, R is 18, C is 3, H is 8, I is 9, V is 22, E is 5. Print the numbers on a strip and ban talking. The team writes letters on a whiteboard. The first team to show ARCHIVE wins, but only if the V is 22 and not 21. U is the usual intruder. A silent round makes that mistake visible without a shout across the stacks.

Run the round twice. The second strip is a different word, SHELF, which is 19 8 5 12 6. Teams who won on ARCHIVE often rush SHELF and swap H and E. The shorter word is not easier when the clock is social. Collect both boards. If every team missed V, teach V from T in a two-minute aside, then stop. Do not run a third word just because the period has time left.

Timer role that only watches the clock

One student holds a phone timer and does not decode. Their job is to call “ten seconds” by raising a hand, since the round is silent. Rotate the role every round so the timer is not always the same child, and so nobody can hide from the alphabet for the whole period. The timer student still encodes the word on paper after the round, as homework in the same five minutes, or they miss the practice the game was built to provide.

Set the timer to 90 seconds for ARCHIVE and 45 for SHELF. Publish those limits before the first round. Changing the limit mid-game to “make it fair” teaches the class to negotiate instead of to prepare. Fairness was the published limit. Next week you may choose a new limit. You may not invent it while a team is writing.

Kitchen version with the word CUPBOARD

At home, CUPBOARD replaces ARCHIVE because the cupboard is in the room. C is 3, U is 21, P is 16, B is 2, O is 15, A is 1, R is 18, D is 4. Hide the number strip inside the cupboard. The finder decodes before they open a second door. Younger siblings can be the timer with a kitchen sand timer. The word is tied to the furniture, so the decode has a place to land.

Leave the answer on the inside of the door for a week, then take it down and ask for the numbers from memory while someone is actually getting a cup. Memory in the kitchen is the transfer. A perfect decode at the table that vanishes at the cupboard was only a worksheet skill. One retry is enough. A third hiding place on the same evening turns the game into chores.

Second silent strip printed as 19 8 5 12 6

SHELF is the planned second strip, and it should already be printed before ARCHIVE begins. 19 8 5 12 6. If you handwrite it while teams are decoding, the digits get messy and H and E swap on the paper itself. A messy strip creates arguments about whether the team missed the cipher or the handwriting. Print both strips in the same font, cut them, and seal SHELF in an envelope labeled “round two.”

Teams who finish ARCHIVE early do not get the envelope early. Everyone starts SHELF together, or the timer role becomes meaningless. Early finishers write the ARCHIVE letters again from memory on the back of their board. That keeps them quiet without giving them a head start the other teams cannot see.

Race teams to decode short number strings into words.

Read article →

[4

post-46","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-classroom-use
["GET
